The Girl with Tears in her Eyes

The drama unfolded in black and white, a silent film that spoke so loudly. He arrived smiling, and embraced the ‘girl with tears in her eyes’. After the initial kiss, she pushed him away determined to steal his smile and lock it away with hers. Now she stood arms folded, staring at him, her eyes accusing him of untold crimes. His arms spread wide expressing his innocence and begging her forgiveness, his smile still lingering but in its death throes.  He tried to hug his way out of trouble but each embrace was met with cold resistance, her body limp in his arms. She scowled at him and stepped away; her face darker than the grey clouds that hung over the street, her body spelt out rage.  He tried a kiss, convinced his boyish charm could win the day, convinced she wouldn’t be able to resist his advances, but she pushed him away, her hands in his chest before folding back across her own. Her eyes were fierce with anger, his eyes filled with innocence, confusion. The look on his face said what have I done? But this feigned ignorance was the final straw, this lady was not for turning. She shook her head and stepped away, throwing up her hand warning him not to follow. He took one step and called out her name but she was striding away and this time, he decided he’d let her go.

  4. This is a precious piece, not just because of the emotional intensity, but also because of the fact that you are a real master of the unsaid, which seems to be one of the most interesting features of your short stories, at least to me.
