4th Floor - No lift

The morning rain had given way to a steamy afternoon heat. Ceri bounded down the stairs, he was in a good mood. His new flat was working out well, everyone had said 4th floor - no lift was a no no,  but it was such a great flat, with a fantastic balcony, amazing view and all mod cons that he was willing to put up with a few stairs, itd get him fit at least. The flat really was special, it was the kind of flat that he’d seen in a Halifax advert years before and had always dreamt of living in. Now he had it and was proving the naysayers wrong. To top off his good mood the lovely Lisa had agreed to go on a date with him and that would put a smile on even the grumpiest of faces.

But the smile was soon to be wiped off his face big style. The 80 steps down he took with the enthusiasm of someone going to meet a pretty girl for a first date, but sometimes the carefree can be careless, step 79 proved his undoing; just one small step for mankind but Ceri missed it and ended up on the floor writhing in agony. The crack in his leg was louder than the thunder that had been rumbling around earlier in the day and the pain shot through his body like a bolt of lightning.

The next thing Ceri knew he was in a hospital bed, his leg in a plaster cast and his head feeling a bit woozy. A nurse smiled at him.
‘Are there you are’ he said ‘we’re going to keep you in overnight just to keep an eye on you but you should be able to go home tomorrow.’
‘My date’ said Ceri, ‘what about my date?’
The nurse smiled again. ‘She said she’d come in later.’

Later that evening when Ceri was sitting up in bed and his head was a bit less clouded with pain and pain relief, a smiling Lisa came into the ward. Apparently when Ceri hadn’t turned up she’d phoned him and a kindly nurse had  answered his phone and explained where he was.
Ceri didn’t know if to feel like his privacy had been invaded or chuffed that the nurse had saved the fledgling relationship. But he did know he was glad to see Lisa. She even agreed to pick him up from hospital the next day.

Ceri was a dab hand with the crutches, he loved them. He hopped over to Lisa’s car laughing and joking. All the way home he had a smile on his face as Lisa told how she thought she’d been stood up but that he couldn’t get rid of her that easily. As she helped him out of the car she placed a small kiss on his cheek, Ceri’s smiled had never been so wide. But the smile was soon to be wiped off his face big style. 4 floors, eighty steps, and no lift was enough to wipe the smile off the happiest of faces.
